The Effect of Illumination on the Working Efficiency in the Printing Office

Abstract
This study was carried out to examine the relationship between the intensity of illumination and working efficiency in the printing offices. The condition of illumination was examined in 5 printing offices located in Seoul. In a typesetting office among them; a close examination was performed to investigate the effects of illumination on the working efficiency according to the change of intensity of illumation by measuring the number of typographical errors, misspelling, and letters fixed upside-down in one page, and also the amount of time spent on typographing.
The results are as follows:
1. Comparing the intensity of illumination in each process with the standard of Industrial Health Act, in only the printing process and the distribution of printing type process, the intensity of illumination exceeded the standard, whereas in all the other processes the levels of illumination were below the standards. .
2. When the intensity of illumination was changed from 105 lux to 200 lux, the number of typographing letters per hour increased by 16.6% in Korean and Chinese letters and 18.5% in English letters.
3. After the condition of illumination was improved from 105 lux to 200 lux, the number of typographical errors, misspelling, and letters fixed upside-down, and also the amount of time spent on typographing decreased by 21.9%, 25.2% and 12.5% in Korean and Chinese letters, and 31.5%, 32.1%, and 31. 3% in English letters respectively.
